At least 15 leaders from various business groups met with President Donald Trump at the White House Tuesday to talk about the Republicans' proposed tax overhaul.
The GOP has yet to release specifics about their plan, but a "framework" released in September calls for lowering both corporate and income taxes for many individuals. Among the association CEOs who met with the president was Dirk Van Dongen of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors, who joked that he and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Tom Donohue were the only two people in the room old enough to have worked on tax cuts implemented under former President Ronald Reagan.
"Thirty years or so have passed," Van Dongen said, according to a transcript of the meeting released by the White House. "The tax code doesn't resemble what was done in '86. Reform was long, long overdue."
Tax cuts are the top policy priority for many business groups, but there isn't agreement about how to go about it. Many associations want tax cuts that preserve existing tax breaks that benefit their industries. But Republican leaders are trying to limit the loss of revenue resulting from the cuts, and in the process have alienated some in the business community.
The National Association of Home Builders announced over the weekend it would oppose the GOP tax plan because lawmakers are seeking to scale back existing tax breaks that benefit homeowners, particularly the mortgage interest deduction. NAHB CEO Jerry Howard reportedly did not attend the Tuesday meeting.
The White House did not release a list of association leaders in attendance, but CEO Update has confirmed 13 in addition to Van Dongen and Donohue:
